SS-31 Spray

SS-31 Spray is supplied as a pre-dissolved, sterile-filtered solution in amber glass bottles fitted with a metered atomizer, at 10 mg or 50 mg per unit. At four residues and roughly 640 Da it is by far the smallest peptide in our catalog, and its alternating aromatic-cationic design makes it freely water-soluble without any organic co-solvent. Headspace is nitrogen-purged before capping, and no reconstitution step is required.

Store SS-31 Spray refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F), upright and protected from light, where sealed units remain within specification for up to 24 months. Once the atomizer is first actuated, use the unit within 30 days. This tetrapeptide is unusually robust for a peptide, since its D-amino acid content resists peptidase attack and its small size leaves no folded structure to disrupt, but light protection still matters because the dimethyltyrosine aromatic ring is photosensitive. Brief transit excursions to 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) are tolerated.

SS-31 does not bind a receptor at all. It is a four-residue aromatic-cationic peptide that partitions into the inner mitochondrial membrane and binds cardiolipin, the signature phospholipid found almost exclusively there. That binding does two things research has characterized in detail. It stabilizes the curvature of cristae membranes, preserving the architecture on which electron transport depends, and it prevents cardiolipin from converting cytochrome c into a peroxidase, which is the reaction that turns a damaged mitochondrion into a reactive oxygen species generator. Birk and colleagues established this cardiolipin interaction directly. Critically, its uptake does not depend on membrane potential, unlike lipophilic cation approaches, so it still concentrates in depolarized mitochondria where potential-driven agents fail.
